In related news, is there much of a performance drop because of the CPU rendering?

By default the it's using LLVMpipe, tested on Intel Ivy Bridge with i915 got about 55fps for the following WebGL demo:

As for embedded devices with Android gralloc module, it's an easy 60fps.
