Phoronix: Another CryEngine Game Looks Towards Linux

Last month we wrote about a CryEngine game coming to Linux and now there's word of another game in the works that's powered by Crytek's highly-impressive game engine and will see a Linux port...

Anyone else donating, I am thinking about? I want to because the game looks cool. However, $350K is probably like 2 to 3 months worth of funding. The project seems very ambitious and the only one with any experience is the composer. They will need other sources of funding and I don't think they are going to get it because of their lack of experience.

There's every reason why SteamOS/Box will be a super hit, therefore game makers are being prudent to have Linux titles available for purchase, and also the bonus of existing Linux users. Then consider that Linux in now dominating computing.

Does someone understand what exactly they are trying to do there? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...omment-5762741
As far as I am concerned nobody can patent something that is not novel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novelty_(patent)
Somehow I find people who think advertising with "proprietary" is a good idea suspicious.

It's a crowdfunding campaign, I don't really want to finance someone's highly proprietary technology or patent encumberment upfront...

Looks like they're trying to patent the game, or some kind of specific mechanic in the game, stating that:

I don't know about that. Somehow I find it hard to believe that independent developers who are developing games for the love of developing games would be troubled to patent what they create. Besides, if it's released it's already protected by copyright law and it can't be patented by someone else. No to mention that trying to patent some kind of game mechanic would be stupid. What if Id had patented "game that is controlled and viewed from a first person point of view with 3D environments". Actually, this might actually have been a good idea, as we wouldn't have the 337788 FPS franchises that exist today.

Gameplay is not subject to copyright, and copyright and patents are totally different things.

But yeah I think their claim that many indies have patents is ridiculous, and they suck even more for even thinking of patenting their stupid combat system.

PS: due to their total lack of experience I wouldn’t trust them with that kind of money.

They intend to support Linux, but that's not really a promise more like a maybe if SteamOS is successful enough. Wouldn't hold your hopes up that much, we'll see.
