    Phoronix: Western Digital WD10EZEX: A 1TB SATA 3.0 HDD For $60

For those in the market for an affordable, large-capacity hard drive, the Western Digital WD10EZEX offers 1TB of storage for about $60 USD. If you are curious how this low-cost Serial ATA 3.0 hard drive performs against other SATA HDDs and SSDs under Ubuntu Linux, here's a set of new disk benchmarks as we test out this SATA 3.0 HDD.

Michael, is it possible for you to offer an Amazon support link, but for their German subsidiary (amazon.de) not, just .com? Thanks!

      Switch relatime with noatime

Thank you for using deadline, now you should go with noatime.

relatime, just like atime, will write on each read. The only difference with rel, is that these writes are delayed, but they still occur.

Think of it: for every single little file read, there must be a write to update the access of that file. Performance and lifetime penalties, for the benefit of a couple of rarely used apps at most.

It also seriously affects the reading only tests. because they have to write as well at some point.

The defaults are used most of the time in benchmarking as it's what most users will encounter.

Wait, why deadline? I thought it only benefited SSDs?

Personally, I would only buy Hitachi or Samsung HDD, due to reliability.

              Intellipark problem

All the WD green series seem to have the aggressive head parking problem : http://koitsu.wordpress.com/2012/05/...-head-parking/
What about this drive? I use 3 WD30ezrx in my home server and I just discovered after 4 month of use that they each have around 170'000 load/unload cycles. They are guaranteed 300'000 cycles...
Fortunately some good guys have written http://idle3-tools.sourceforge.net/ to fix this problem under Linux.

From what I've read, the EZ series doesn't work with wdidle3. If they do have so many cycles, then probably the problem persists, just the official tools to solve it don't really work.

idle3-tools works for the EZRX at least.

If you think that is a lot then my system disk in server reports

Load_Cycle_Count as 2839993 over Power_On_Hours 26666 which is ~306726 for given period of 4 months. And that is with a var/tmp and /tmp in the ramdisk and several less important logs such as from distccd directed to the /tmp/logs and no scheduled file indexing... but several different server demons running on it

I welcome any ideas to further decrease that number. I definitely will checkout that idle3-tools
