R9-290x Support on Ubuntu/Linux

If I missed a current thread covering this, I apologize, but I'm currently building a new machine for the purposes of gaming, content creation, and perhaps mining. I'm looking at buying a new ASUS R9-290X. Have there been any tests comparing this GPU between Linux & Windows, and how well supported is it currently on Linux? Some research seems to show AMD is making strides to update Linux drivers at the same time as Windows and even out the support between the two. Is this true?

AMD Radeon R9 290 On Linux. Not quite what you seek, but still, take a look. I would actually recommend the open source drivers at this point.
