Phoronix: Open-Source RPG Projects Worth Mentioning

Earlier this week on Phoronix I noted the new release of the GNU RPG Engine. To no surprise given its very rudimentary feature-set for a game engine in 2014, it was laughed at by many Phoronix readers and several were appalled it is even a GNU project...

Worth noting, IMO, is that FIFE also supports programming games in C++ (although the easiest way is probably using Python) and that gemrb is planned to become a general purpose RPG engine (well, for the ones following the same style, although the ruleset is planned to become flexible), not only Infinity anymore.

    Default PlaneShift

IŽd also mention PlaneShift[1]. While the content is not under a free software license, the client and server code is. And its quite evolved already. I enjoy playing it.

GemRB should(?) get more attention. If it really is "Nearly feature-complete" it could kill things like Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition without much hassle.

PlaneShift is a quite a bit different from the RPG lists above, but still a game with huge focus on roleplaying. It also has been under development for over 10 years and didn't die yet. On the game server there are most of the time more than 20 players.

Apart from the artistic content it is Open Source. So I think it is also very worth mentioning.
