Phoronix: SteamOS Update Now Officially Supports Intel

Valve has issued another SteamOS 1.0 "Alchemist" beta update during CES week. This latest beta now comes with official Intel HD Graphics support for SteamOS but they are still going without any official support for the AMD Catalyst driver...

This is all good and well, but would love it if they could start pushing Mesa 10. We will be at version 12 or 13 before Debian Stable get Mesa 10 in their repos.

So Chronos Steam Machine and Digital Storm Bolt II look like overpriced PCs with a SteamOS sticker on them, dual-booting Windows/SteamOS. Is this what we are going to see in the future, every desktop PC getting a SteamOS sticker?

I am thrilled too see an actual console like Steam box at console prices with comparable performance, well at least XBone level. And no, it doesn't have to dual-boot Windows. Am I asking for too much?

Valve released Mesa 10 in its first SteamOS update long ago. I think it was December 19th. I hope Intel HD Graphics will perform well even without 3.12 or soon 3.13 linux kernel.

I've added Mesa 10.1 on my 3.11 Kernel Ubuntu 13.10 - it gave both my mobile Ivy Bridge i3 and i5 an approximate 10% boost. It's really not that bad - on my i3 Thinkpad (which is anything but a "gaming platform") most (Unity 3D)-indie games work perfectly ok, and the big picture mode is a smooth experience.

F20 doesn't have it either at the moment ... Lame.

SteamOS has been running Mesa 10.0.1 since the 12/19 update:

Updated Intel graphics stack to Mesa 10.0.1 Applied an Intel kernel fix to re-enable KMS support Fixed a problem where Trine 2 could cause audio to stop working by restricting direct audio access to the sound server Enabled audio from the desktop session; the default audio device is still hardcoded to discrete graphics HDMI audio for now Enabled 3D passthrough in the VMWare driver Fixed Steam controller firmware upgrade by adding USB auto-mounting Added NTP time support Added XDG directory helpers Added...

This seems to be quite close to what you are looking for. It's got 500 gflops more than what PS4 offers, but with only 2 CPU cores, for 500$.
CyberPower promises your living room will never be the same in 2014 when it debuts its stylish Steam Machine series at CES. Powered by Valve Corporation’s Steam OS, the CYBERPOWERPC Steam Machine will feature full desktop PC performance in an advance stylish form.
