VIA Technologies has announced this morning that they have partnered with Mozilla for providing support and development for Firefox OS on new devices...

Basically, they are wanting to implement all of the support for cheap. Just look at the issues.

Meanwhile, they let their users down on open source support, or ANY support how many times?

      Shitty

      VIA APC seems really shitty.
800 MHz and 512 MB RAM, wow really shitty.

      It's like a Raspberry Pi.
Smartphones system-on-chip are like 2.3 GHz quad-core with 3 GB RAM.

VIA stuff is all pretty pointless when you compare it to where linux-sunxi is today. HW is more powerful, and it actually is actively supported by an existing community, and you can get development boards on every streetcorner.

VIA attempting to create a community is pretty laughable. You can get a free APC if you fix an issue, but do they have datasheets for their SoC and circuit diagrams available for their Boards? And even if you do manage to fix an issue marked "free APC", what are you going to do with it, you had to buy your own to begin with. All pretty useless.

It's nice to know that Richard Brown is still messing up VIA marketing. I am amazed that he kept his job over this last decade.

At least they're trying, with kernel and uboot sources for the chip available, and relatively cheap boards.

Via if you're reading, this is a start, but you need more. Source for every chip, datasheets for starters. Please start with WM8880

It's like rpi except not at all. RPI is running on an ancient arm11 v6. The soc you are citing is a current top of the line so hardly the norm for smart phones.
The moto x is dual core at 1.5ghz with 1GB and it is fast.

Too little, too late. The hardware has no traction, and looks quite pale compared to the competition. The hardware is not easily available. There basically is some (remaining) VIA employee playing with Firefox-OS, and they thought they'd try to make some noise at CES with it. They aren't fooling anybody Also, firefox-os which is not what average-joe-linux user wants to spend their time on. They either use android, or they want a proper linux.

I spent a lot of my time on VIA hardware from 2003-2007, it's where modesetting was trailblazed. VIA was constantly dropping the ball during that time. They could've had something great, but they just botched up everything. All that is worth remembering from that time is Mini/Nano/Pico-ITX, and the term Modesetting. The company itself just shrunk and shrunk and shrunk, as they just were executing things horribly, time and time again.

The WM chips had a bit of success before the allwinner A10 hit the market. But now it is dead in the water. Today you need to look at Allwinner, Rockchip, Mediatek and perhaps AMLogic. VIA botched that one up as well, and their desperate but flawed attempts to make up for it now are all but convincing.

The funny thing is though, with my history with VIA... Guess what GPU they are using? Guess what quite a few of those "Free device" issues are about? If they had learned anything in the last decade, you'd think they'd know who to come talk to. But no.

              Goodbye VIA, it's been... interesting.

What GPU do they use, libv? I couldn't find out.

Sounds like you have bad blood with VIA.

Please leave all the bias at the door, it's not welcome here.

And useless would imply that it had literally no uses, and it obviously has at least one, so you're lying there too.

No bias allowed? on a forum? What breed of horse is it that you are sitting on?

And how is this for being unbiased: http://phoronix.com/forums/showthrea...746#post386746
