Phoronix: SteamOS vs. Ubuntu 13.10 Linux Benchmarks

Complementing the SteamOS vs. Windows 8.1 performance benchmarks published earlier in the week, here are more NVIDIA OpenGL Linux benchmarks when comparing Valve's Debian-based SteamOS performance to Ubuntu 13.10.

Great that Valve managed to market "yet another linux distro", because it should be clear now that's all SteamOS is.

And this is great, because we'll not be forced to use SteamOS to have best performance and experience.

What did you expect? That so many changes are made so it becomes incompatible with other distros? Or ask users to install Debian and make/maintain themselves all the necessary modifications?

Which is exactly what they said it would be from the very start, and what we all wanted. Right?

I don't understand what people were expecting. This is what SteamOS was from the start, just a slightly modified ubuntu(well, debian now) that can run steam out of the box without much hassle.

And I have to say more.

Xbox One and PS4 are just a PC with custom OS and some proprietary APIs. There is no more big differences between PC and Consoles.
Xbox One is a PC with Windows and PS4 is a PC with freeBSD.

    Default 720p 1080p and 4k

Actual TV sets works at 720p 1080p or 4k
Other resolutions are not relevant for Steam OS benchmarks
And even 4k is too much 720p and 1080p is enough

Exactly, if anything one would hope any improvements and increase in performance would feed back to the rest of us (which sort of has been the case with the GPU drivers etc), so the latest Ubuntu and SteamOS being on some sort of parity can only be a good thing.

Let's not forget SteamOS is primarily designed for the living room stuff and to be a pick up and play solution, not necessarily as a desktop replacement. So we want it all to remain pretty similar at the core and have a similar gaming experience either way.
