  • fglrx on Fedora 20

Has anyone managed to get fglrx working on Fedora 20? If so, what did you do? I just upgraded to F20 (kernel 3.11) from F19 using Fedup, and reinstalled the AMD driver. As soon as xserver starts, it crashes everytime. After reinstalling fglrx, now it shows an error message ("oops, gnome-shell has crashed ..."), and drops me back to terminal.

I suspect it is some permissions problem again, but I am not sure. Can someone test a fedora 20 installation with fglrx and confirm?

I installed the Fedora 20 XFCE spin the other night, and was able to get the most recent beta 13.11 to work. I haven't put 13.12 on yet. I've also switched to Mate+Compiz and beside horrible performance in Dota 2 with Compiz running everything works great.

    Whats the version of FGLRX?

The problem is the wayland support on some packages, so you must recompile them with that support disabled as shown here. I have compiled them and uploaded here.

        Fedora 20 - Kernel 3.11.10-301 - KDE 4.11.3 - Catalyst 13.12

        Hi everyone
I installed the Catalyst 13.12 from amd.com and replace its files with the one in https://github.com/kolasa/fglrx-13.251 and it worked with no problem till now. (I use KDE on Fedora 20 with kernel 3.11.10-301)

        1- Download the driver
        2- Execute it
3- After reaching the first dialog of the installer overwrite files extracted from the installer "../install/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/" with the files from the above link.
        4- Continue the installer
        5- Reboot

            GNOME Only

It crashes because the GNOME 3.10 shipped with Fedora 20 enables experimental Wayland/EGL support.

It doesn't work well with Catalyst driver at this moment.

So I borrowed an old NVidia GPU from a friend to test how NVidia drivers are. This is a very old GPU (4 years old?) and a much cheaper one. Wow! nvidia drivers on the old card gives me better FPS on flightgear than fglrx on my 5770!! WTH?! Additionally, firefox scrolling seems to be very smooth. I always assumed that the lag I got while scrolling is because of the images loading - but no it doesnt lag at all! I wonder why.

Either way, I couldnt get fglrx to work with fedora 20. There is also a new kernel-3.12 update out today - so I am using that with the opensource driver now. I hope fglrx supports EGL soon, or else we will all be stuck with Fedora 19 (or 20, if it works) since Fedora 21 onwards would be based on Wayland. Every other distro will update as well, so fglrx needs to improve, and fast.

The 5770 is supported by the open r600g drivers. and r600g is known to be almost at performance parity with Catalyst (about 70 - 80%). So there is no reason to need Catalyst for your card at all.

If it were a Southern Islands (7XXX series) or Sea Islands (8xxx series) then using Catalyst makes sense. But not for the Evergreen series.

Don't worry , fglrx will improve soon. It will drop support for your card. So it could be wise, you actually read at least wikipedia entry on radeon driver and compare its performance from benchmarks here. It scores 80-110% of catalyst paared with working DPM and video acceleration, so why bother?
