  • CentOS 4.4 and ATI Radeon 9250 Pro

    Hi,

I have played within the last few hours with the ATI closed source driver trying to make my card work (Gigabyte 9250 Pro card).

I'm using CentOS 4.4 with the latest official kernel: 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL. I installed the driver, let it compiled, checked that there are no errors, that the module loads, unloads - in short, everything looks OK.

    Now the "fun" part.
I have my xorg.conf file. With the "radeon" driver and loads happily and runs nicely. When I try to change it to "fglrx" - it simply goes back to console to tell me that (EE) No devices detected and "no screens found".

I have used the aticontrol with dozens of parameters. Nada, didn't help.

My Machine: Pentium 4, 2GB RAM, CentOS 4.4 with all updates, kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL (same as RHEL).

Here are 2 "attachments". The first one is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, the other - the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks,
    Hetz

You are trying to use the 8.33.6 display driver. This display driver no longer supports the R200 series, which includes your card. You need to use the 8.28.8 fglrx driver as it is the last to support your GPU.

      Michael

      Hi,

I have tried (before posting it) to go with 8.28.8.

The results were horrible: it simply turned off the monitor, no matter if I used the VGA or DVI connector, it simply shuts off the monitor and I couldn't do/see anything until I had to reboot the machine (I could do ssh, but I couldn't even get the X starting again even when I changed the driver from "fglrx" to radeon and removing the module - until I rebooted the machine).

      Thanks,
      Hetz

Sounds like that issue could be something to do with DPMS, which you might want to disable then.

          tried that

          either as

          Options "dpms" "false"

or by removing the line entirely from xorg.conf

          Same problem.

Are you in any IRC room so we can talk please?

          Thanks,
