Is floating point textures a requirement of GL 3.2/3.3? If so, how did they work around patents?

Been discussed on phoronix several times, still an interesting topic though.

        1. Yes.
        2. Intel licensed it for their drivers.
        3. It's not licensed for other hardware, but if you want to enable it anyway there is a compile-time flag you can configure Mesa with. See a lawyer to discuss whether that's legal or not in your jurisdiction (if you care).

Patents are only an issue if you distribute pre-compiled binaries. Mesa only distributes the source code, so the problem is shifted to the distributors, who decide to enable it or not (and Gentoo leaves the choice to the user).
