    cannot enable compiz effects .installed 8.3 propietary driver and no luck

    HI GUYS HAVE TRIED UBUNTU FOR THE FIRST TIME ..I HAVE A SAPPHIRE HD 2600 XT RADEON CARD.INSTALLED THE LATEST ATI DRIVER ati-driver-installer-8-3-x86.x86_64. FROM THE GUIDE ON THE FORUMS AND DONE EVERYTHING PERFECTLY ..BUT STILL CANNOT GET COMPIZ EFFECTSTO BE ENABLED OR TO WORK.. IS THERE ANY SUGGESTIONS..HERE IS MY INFO FROM MY PC..i am running gutsy

    The renderer string doesn't look right -- as if you are running the software renderer (Mesa). I have to run off for a bit but my guess is that the driver is not fully installed.

      Hello there,

      Not an expert on this myself. I've had the same problem as yours with an ATI X1650Pro card. I got it to work with a fresh install of Gutsy. Finally got tired of trying to get the old install to accept ATI card and reinstalled. I'll try to see what I can to help.

      First, make sure in /usr/bin/compiz (sudo gedit) under "Whitelist" you put fglrx in there.

      Edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with sudo and make sure under "Device" you are using "fglrx" instead of "mesa". I had to do that when I first installed my ATI driver, somehow aticonfig --initial did not set xorg.conf up correctly.

      If you're seeing MESA you don't have ATI drivers installed. MESA is probably a fail safe. Make sure in your Motherboard BIOS settings you have AGP Graphics Aperature size the same as the memory size on your graphics card, if its AGP.

      If all else fails install Envy a package that installs/remove vido drivers for you in Ubuntu: http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

      Do you get an libGL.so.1 errors? if so you could need to look at the symbolic links...
