Phoronix: Why A Popular Open-Source Game Isn't On Steam

While more and more closed-source games -- ranging from indie titles to AAA games -- are heading to Steam ahead of SteamOS and Steam Machines, there still isn't too many open-source games on Valve's digital distribution platform. Here's some information why one of the more popular cross-platform open-source first person shooters isn't yet to be found on Steam...

    - It's a myth that Steam doesn't support GPL-licensed games. Other GPL software like Blender and Warsow and Aquaria and Gish are available via Steam.
Blender? Are you sure? It must be a nice game, I have to try it

Seriously, where did you find Blender?

He did write 'other _software_ like Blender...', and Valve contacted the Blender mailing list (in August iirc) and stated that they wanted to distribute Blender for free on Steam.

Not only that, but they (Valve) also set up a donation program on Valve Steam Workshop for Blender which has already resulted in two 6-month Blender developer contracts from the first donation payout alone.

I just played 0.7 a few days ago and it is already a very polished and enjoyable game. It could be released right now, but the developers have high standards.

Why should the game "be on Steam" if they can use DRM free distribution channels instead?

Woa, can we do this for Gimp ?

              They should consider it !

but as of now they're at least trying some small crowdsourcing

While many of GIMPs developers have a full time job and work for it in their spare time others would like to improve the software with funded features. There is a very cool new possible feature now that you'll maybe see in GIMP when you decide to fund it: Mirror Painting!

                maybe they want more users.

maybe they also want in the future good compatibility with big picture and the SteamPad.

Steam distribution doesn't equal DRM, DRM on Steam is optional.

As such having Blender or Game X on Steam just means more exposure and a convenient way to download and install (atleast for those who use operating systems without package managers).
