Phoronix: Linux 3.11-rc5 Celebrates 20 Years Since Windows 3.11

Twenty years ago today Microsoft released Windows 3.11 while today Linus Torvalds released the Linux 3.11-rc5 kernel. He wished he could have released Linux 3.11 kernel final today, but that didn't happen...

    20th anniversarry

Well, on the other hand, given the stability of microsoft OSes, releasing an "rc" linux 3.11 on windows 3.11's 20th birthsday seems rather appropriate. :-)

          1. Linux is just a kernel. So the comparison to Windows is not appropriate.
          2. The NT kernel is based on more design concepts. When Linus was designing the Linux kernel he based it on old generation ideas. The NT kernel is more "modern" is design and architecture. That is not to say that Linux kernel is not good.
After all, the ak-47 is of old design is and is still extremely successful. However, The FN SCAR is undoubtedly more technologically modern.

It still is just fine for desktop use. The problem is the rest of the software in a linux distro, not the kernel. Although the lack of regression testing is bad for both enterprise and home users.

The difference being that Linux is the most popular volunteer project and it has actual full-time employees who work on it. Most Linux-based projects are things that developers do on their off time which is why they aren't great. Canonical and Red Hat being the exception. If it wasn't for those companies then Linux would not be where it is today.

Then you are in luck (if that is a Windows 8 laptop). I saw they were having a hard time getting this right due to bad BIOS-es. Linux has to identify itself as Windows 8 to make things work, otherwise they will hit 'untested codepaths' in the BIOS causing stuff to break.
