    Opus is the audio codec master race, there is no competition.

      Yes, Opus can replace all existing lossy formats. It covers both the lower end for voice and low latency up to the music multi-channel range, and even switch dynamically according to content, etc.

      They are also working in a new video codec with a similar goal called Daala. So ignore the previous vp9 comment, which is google's.

      Xiph's codecs are open and patent free.

        Daala won't be ready for another five years. VP9 + Opus media will be consumed through YouTube by hundreds of million of people at the end of the year.
