Phoronix: AMD Catalyst 8.03 Linux Driver

Last month with the Catalyst 8.02 Linux driver we mentioned just how low on the end-user changes the fglrx driver has been in recent months, and today the Catalyst 8.03 Linux driver has been released with the release train slowly chugging along. The only new feature in this month's proprietary Linux driver is X-Video support for the Xpress 1200 hardware, but there are a few bug fixes that may satisfy some Linux users.

[...] and fixed the first OpenGL application on X Server 1.4 from hanging.
This was fixed in the Catalyst 8.2 release already.

And guys, better not look at the Windows Catalyst 8.3 release notes, you would start crying otherwise...

I can confirm that TexturedVideo works much better now...

I'm still getting a file not found when trying to download the file. Mm...when I can actually download it, then we'll see...

          Correct link

Looks like whoever at ATI in charge of naming the installer is a bit schizophrenic when it comes to sticking a consistent naming scheme. After some fiddling around with the link I eventually worked out that they typo'ed 8.3 as 8-3 in the URL.

            8.42.3: ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run
            ATI Catalyst 7.11: ati-driver-installer-7-11-x86.x86_64.run
            ATI Catalyst 7.12: ati-driver-installer-8.443.1-x86.x86_64.run
            ATI Catalyst 8.1: ati-driver-installer-8-01-x86.x86_64.run
            ATI Catalyst 8.2: ati-driver-installer-8-02-x86.x86_64.run
            ATI Catalyst 8.3: ati-driver-installer-8.3-x86.x86_64.run

It's no wonder their release maintainer got his/her URL wrong this time around.

              Code:
              % ./ati-driver-installer-8.3-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/gutsy
              ...
              # Driver package
              ldconfig -n usr/X11R6/lib/
              make: ldconfig: Command not found
              make: *** [binary] Error 127
              Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.P12799
For crying out loud, do they really need to run ldconfig in their package build scripts. Building anything as a root user is a recipe for disaster if someone makes a typo in a Makefile somewhere! Grrr...
