Phoronix: Xfce, LXDE, & GNOME Are Running On Ubuntu XMir

With all of the controversy surrounding the Mir Display Server for Ubuntu Linux on non-Unity desktops, a Canonical engineer sought to find out what Linux desktops would work atop Mir if using the XMir X.Org Server compatibility layer...

What is the performance hit of using Xmir? Benchmarks?

It seems useful for backwards compatibility but I doubt that any of the desktops will want to ship with a compatibility layer if it negatively impacts performance.

Pointless, utterly pointless. Soon everyone will use Wayland anyway, and who even remembers that some little thing called "Mir" used to exist?

Relax man this is just a product of a long dev-mailing list between *buntu developers on discussion of future Mir in other distros.

We shouldn't dismiss it immediately simply because its Canonical..

Whilst I'll be the first to say Canonical makes some crap products (unity only became a production-quality product in the last release), and they tend to rush unfinished programs into production, it is possible Mir as a final product may be able to compete with Mir. That being said, them constantly making their own products instead of joining existing projects with similar goals wont encourage the community to join development, and may naturally lead to a worse product.

Either way, we all win because both Wayland and Mir are a huge step forward for Linux over X11

I admit that may be a possibility, yes.

That has yet to be seen.

XFCE has no plans to use anything but X, some of the other lighter desktops may be in similar positions.
