There is little chance of that happening in the first place even if it does run FreeBSD. I'm sure they have Secureboot enabled among other items that only allow the code to run on signed systems.

so you want linux being taken, modified proprietary used for closed hardware and the community, users and devs being left with... nothing?

that's not about being fanatical. it is about being hard. as long as others are so weak dute to their licensing like freebsd you will NEVER profit in any way of it. you will only see the fruits of projects like linux etc. being used and assimilatend and then closed away, like apple did, now sony did and MS did since the company was founded.

if you allow them to take without givng, people will take without givng anything back.

and you seem to be so foolish that you even lough when being raped.

      • Now we can see who uses BSDs...

Now we can see who loves BSDs. And as usually, these are turned out to be proprietary f..ks who are also inclined on DRM restrictions. So you can feel all these BSD "freedoms" on your own butt, after buying locked down device and then ... understanding that it's only Sony who haves freedom. Freedom to deny you your freedoms to change code on your device, freedom to forbid you to launch your own code, etc. Ha-ha. So unless you're Sony you're free to give up your freedoms and just obey what Sony tells. That's how BSD "freedom" works: couple of strongest corporations are perfectly free to f...k you up and apply whatever kind of dictatorship they want. You're free to obey or GTFO. Really cool choice.

Ah, wait. There is free version of BSDs, right? Here we can see how this approach performs: while BSD guys are struggling with a lack of GPU drivers, being mostly unusable for gaming/desktop, some proprietary corps are already using their OS for gaming. The problem? Ha-ha, Sony haven't shared their achievements with upstream project. So unless you're Sony (or equally huge monster), you can't make BSDs to run games for you. Most ironically it looks like if AMD is about to write custom closed-source driver for Sony's BSD flavor. But it looks like if BSD f..ks would still lack AMD GPU drivers in FreeBSD itself. It's really cool to see how BSD nuts are getting their views of freedom tested on their own butts. To no surprise, most BSD "fans" are using win or mac os as desktop. Which is another indication of project's EPIC FAIL.

So if someone wants to be treated like third-rate crap, they're welcome to use FreeBSD. If someone wants quality product capable of running games, it turns out they have to give up all BSD freedoms in favor of Sony corp freedoms. As for me, such community <-> corps interaction model really suxx. And that's why BSDs are losing to penguins.

This is not super relevant to the API itself, of course, but is a huge deal to developers shipping actual games - they can't write GL versions of the game if they want to target the PC.
Is this not pretty much the opposite of what valve said their experience was?

That the Linux version runs faster than the Windows version (270.6) seems a little counter-intuitive, given the greater amount of time we have spent on the Windows version.

But IIRC that engine is D3D9 which is completely awful and has poor performance.

what do you mean; "Now we can see..."?! ...The fact is BSD code is present in Windows and (obviously) MacOSX, as well. (aside from many other oses; Sun OS, NeXt, etc -> spanning over many years. ie: decades) this isn't anything new... And it's NOT a dictatorship. No one is forcing anyone to use a BSD license, nor any of the BSDs -> and those who do -> are well-aware of what a BSD license entails, and the advantages/strengths (or disadvantages) that it provides... Sony isn't denying you nor the BSD developers sh*t by using BSD (if that is the case). The license allows this. You seem to not understand something really basic here BSD License != GPL ... the freedoms you think it (BSD license) owes you - it does not, end of story. ie: stop being a baby.

I love how you spew speculation as being fact. We don't actually know what Sony or AMD has or hasn't done or will do in the future, for that matter... I've also never gotten the impression that FreeBSD developers goal is to overtake Win or Mac. ~ More likely, some of their developers probably end up going to work for some of these companies using BSD; providing their expertise of *BSD systems ~ which probably isn't a bad thing for them, at all...

Why are you crying over spilled milk, that literally has NOTHING to do with you?

Linux' popularity over BSD is not anything new; this really isn't a question of BSDs losing to penguins, nor a question of them giving up freedoms to Sony. (again, BSD license is permissive. it's the point of it, dude _> use your brain). You may not like BSD, nor like it's license ~ but i am also going to assume you haven't all that much experience with any of the BSDs, nor are you using any BSD -> So what exactly is your problem, then??

              • Hmm, one more thing I'm wondering, if the BSD license requires you to preserve copyright notices, but you make the code based on the BSD code proprietary and thus don't ship sources to begin with, then while you may have the notices in the development version, nobody outside the company is going to see them. So in that case such a requirement sounds moot...

It's in the order of appearance on wikipedia's article, and only quoted what I deemed relevant, since I already posted the link to the article if you want to read them full.
Note that except for the first one, which is a bit ambiguous (and is the oldest), all of them are explicit in that the copyright notice must ship with binaries, documentation, and advertising.
