  • When will 80211ac support come to Linux?

As question. Some manufacturers have already started shipping 80211ac wifi devices (mainly USB) which currently only have Windows drivers. And Intel is due to release its own 80211ac driver in Q2 3013, and yet the mac80211 stack in Linux is still apparently not even 80211ac ready. This is in spite of the fact that Intel claims its upcoming ac adapter (which is in mPCIe form) will support Linux, which I find hughly improbable considering how mac80211 still is in no position to support the latest addition to the 80211 wireless networking standard.

Can anyone who is an authority (or is familiar with) in the wifi stack development in Linux comment on this?

Considering that there are several Wifi Routers with 802.11ac capability on the market, and that most (but not all) run Linux, I'd say that there is already 802.11ac support for Linux. Though probably they are still using vendor private stacks.

802.11ac support for mac80211 has been developed since mid 2012, parts have been merged starting with kernel 3.6.

ath10k driver to support Atheros 802.11ac hardware is in the works: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux....general/106989
mwifiex patches to add 802.11ac http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux....general/104256

      Thanks for the information.

Although I find it amusing that a driver for 80211ad was actually pushed into mainline way before 80211ac support can be fully implemented...
