I'm sure Michael will put a story up tomorrow, but we signed off on Alpha today, no more slips. It doesn't work in UEFI native mode on Macs, but otherwise it's pretty good.

Was I serious about my statements about g3.8 and doubting fedora19 will be much improved from 18? yes, but now I will have to test and see and I will be the first one to admit being a dick if f19 proves to be good (or better than f18)

but it's hard to compare it to f17 since all alphas and betas run significantly slower since they were compiled with debug

I hated that specific version = fedora 18... hated it, badly... since it fucked up my upgrade cycle and made me jump to a different distro.

I'm running it righ now and yes... it's pretty good.

I can see why they are so eager to get it out asap and make people forget about the disaster that was f18.


buggine me: something in either this kernel's synaptic touchpad drivers or gnome 3.8... too sensitive, I can't use 2 finger scrolling since it always assumes a tap and I can't even use tap to click since it 60% assumes double tap.

But I can deal with that.


The minimize window button that I saw in some screenshots of gnome 3.8 is nowhere to be seen, neither there's an option to turn it on...

Install gnome-tweak-tool, run it, go to Shell Extensions, toggle 'Default minimize and maximize' (yes, I know it's not obvious, but it's there).

I don't know off hand, but I do know that our lead X maintainers - Dave Airlie and Adam Jackson - are as plugged into Intel driver development as anything. If they haven't yet sna to be used by default yet, they have a good reason for it. Dave may be around to comment, he posts here sometimes.

To be honest, we really don't test the USB persistence stuff much. You get it in the state it happens to be in...so I can't give you a definitive answer on that one, sorry.

what's the diff between block and drop?

If you 'block' a port, anything that tries to connect to it will get a response immediately which makes it clear the port is blocked. If you 'drop' it, packets to that port are just dropped, with no 'rejected!' response being sent to the client trying to access it. Basically, if you're trying to connect to a server and the server is just dropping the packets, you can't tell whether there's something at the remote end dropping the packets or there's nothing there at all; you just don't know. So some people argue that 'drop' is more secure than 'block' because you are providing less information to the attacker.

I don't run web servers ftp or remote desktop plus I got pwned in windows so now I only allow outgoing connections.

If I set firewalld to 'drop' I can't use firefox but if I set it to 'block' everything works

I do wish for something more in the lines of gufw where you can set it up it exactly the way you like it with specific ports and programs.

I do wish those guys weren't so conservative, no issues in gen4 or 5.


Only bad thing I can think of is that memory management in the live session still hasn't been looked at or fixed, after a few hours of using live session mostly browsing html5 videos on youtube and doing this and that I still kill firefox and then the whole system crashes.


but I guess no one designs live sessions for intensive use.

I think the problem is that Firefox caches videos in local 'storage' so you can seek through them, and of course in a live session, local 'storage' is RAM. I'll try and see if it would be possible to tweak FF's behaviour when running live, but you're quite right that it's not a high priority issue.
