Yeah EA sucks . Take the classical C&C games as an example (RA1,TS, RA2), there are still quite many players around but EA just doesn't give a fuck. New patches are needed to ensure a Cheat free environment, compatibility with Win8 and bug fixes etc, but don't EVER expect EA do to something - or even care. There would be enough willing people to work on the source code, but EA wouldn't touch the source code even with a stick it seems.

This is a bitter shame, those games are like 15 years old and they need compatibility fixes, if they at least would bring out patches like Blizzard does for Starcraft/Diablo. But no don't expect that. At least the former EA CEO has abdicated recently - the one who was made CEO in 2007 and...
    • has introduced DRM and "Always Online"
    • made SimCity a disaster
    • is mainly responsible for EAs market crash in 2008
    • cancelled server funds for games that werent even 1/2 years old
    • made pressure on developers to release unfinished games (C&C Tiberium Wars, Kanes Wrath etc)
    • cancelled resources for projects like C&C-Live-Team, KW Patch 1.03, etc
    • and much more.. .

Also funny how EAs share were rising after his rejection from office Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) Is Rising After CEO Steps Down

Also it is insolent to claim they updated compatibility in the new C&C collection - where in fact they did nothin
    17 Command & Conquer titles
Updated for Windows 7 and Windows Vista
Instead the community has to play around with projects like Ares, that inject source code via a dll...

The only good thing EA did was the decision to sponsor servers to the community after they killed Westwood Studios: see www.xwis.net and www.xwis.net/forums

Im quite curious as to what the source code will contain, since all the assets, models and artwork are still Activision's and Raven Software's property.

Unless a new team has started working on it fairly recently, Dark Forces: A Mod for Jedi Academy is dead. The DF2Mod (the last in a series of attempted JK conversions) team also disbanded.

DarkXL is still around, but it doesn't use the id Tech 3 engine. It is however open source as well. The XL Engine currently only supports Windows, but OS X and Linux support are supposedly forthcoming. BloodXL (Blood), DaggerXL (The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall), and OutlawsXL (Outlaws) are also in the works.

I wish the LucasArts library had been in a source code escrow, or at least that the non-Lucasfilm-related IP (i.e. the IP that aren't related to a film property and that Disney doesn't give a shit about) had been legally transferred to their respective creators.

Yeah, but you know, that would just make too much sense.

lol i would love to see the TFU games to be release as open source! That would be awesome fixing the PC version and making it a true pc game (like JK:JA) and not a P.O.S. console port. Though due to so many 3rd party tools such as Havok-, DMM- and Euphoria-coded that would make quite a lot of angry lawyers.
