This is beginning to me off.
Acer Aspire 5742 that has "Intel HD Graphics" falls to low graphics mode at the drop of a hat. It will not boot beyond the warning screens and I have to go to recovery mode then I get the low graphics desktop loaded.
NOT good.
I can fix it but sometimes I have to reinstall ubuntu-desktop, and sometimes unity-greeter. It just took an hour to get to the proper desktop.
It's a fully patched version of 13.04 with:
I had a lot of breakages on old Intel 845.
From what I have found out, Intel broke a lot by both transition to SNA and by OpenGL3 advance.
Additionally (!), unity compiz components need to be patched to work with whole, otherwise compiz can't start.
So, oibaf PPA or xorg-edgers won't save you.
Get good old debian or roll back to 12.10 till all this settles down.
But, because the whole dirt flying in the air is only due to heavy work, I am completely ok with that and thank Intel very much.
