Ubuntu 12.10 + Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970] Help!

  • Ubuntu 12.10 + Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970] Help!

    Hey everyone,

    I just built a computer and have since installed Ubuntu Desktop 12.10 on for the operating system. My overall goal is to set up my system to perform GPU cracking utilizing oclHashcat-plus, which needs the AMD Catalyst 13.1 video driver version to work. I have two Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970] video cards and want to set things up as to use both for GPU cracking. However, I cannot get that AMD proprietary Catalyst driver installed correctly. Prior to each of the four things I have tried, I have reinstalled Ubuntu just to be sure that nothing was residually preventing the installation from something else I have tried. Also, in all instances I have done a apt-get update && apt-get upgrade prior to any of the things that I have tried below. I have attempted the following multiple times each:

    1. Downloaded the Catalyst 13.1 driver directly from AMD and installed via the ".run" file. I tried both the generic version as well as the targeted version for Ubuntu Quantal.
    2. Followed the directions three times at wiki.cchtml.com.
    - Including using the "Generic Config" command of aticonfig --initial -f --adapter=all
    - Including using the basic "Minimal Config" (Adjusted for my video cards of course).
    3. Attempted to install the Ubuntu-supplied fglrx/Catalyst driver.
    4. Attempted to install the driver by utilizing the "Ubuntu-X" PPA.

    I have not been successful in getting the driver installed. The only two outcomes that I have come to after trying everything stated about is that:
    1. After the login prompt, nothing loads after authentication. I still have the ability to "Right-Click" and manipulate settings, but nothing else in this scenario.
    2. When booting the system, I get the error saying "The system is running in low graphics mode." From here the only functionality I have is to drop into a login prompt with CONTROL+ALT+F2, but none of the other options displayed in that error window.

    I wouldn't say I am good with Linux, but I am decent. Honesetly at this point I am totally out of ideas. I have spent so much time trying to do this, but have so far had no luck. If someone could help me figure this out, it would be so greatly appreciated!!

    What't output of glxinfo after installing driver using this method? (Generation deb packages.) If you not able to run Terminal under Unity, you can run "DISPLAY=:0 glxinfo > glxinfo" under another VT (Ctrl+Alt+F2).

      When installing using the Generic Catalyst13.1 driver, dident you get any errors?
      I had to install the linux generic headers, because apparently Ubuntu forgot to include them......

      Yust make sure to remove fglrx completely first
      Then Install the Linux Headers(3.5.0.23 in my case)
      Then Install the Generic driver and Hopefully it work for you

        After generating and installing the deb packages I ran "amdconfig --initial -f --adapter=all" and rebooted. After the reboot, it came back in low graphics mode again and then here is the output from what you suggested.

        returns nothing.

        I did not receive any errors when I tried installing with the generic version of the driver. I did realize that I needed the generic headers. Also before I did anything to try to install the generic driver I ran "apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*" to uninstall everything per the instructions at wiki.cchtml.com

        I should note that I have not been trying your suggestions simultaneously. Like I said in my initial post I have re-installed quite a few times just to make sure I am not screwing myself over with residual configuration. I know it is overkill, but takes out second guessing for me.

          May you upload /var/log/Xorg.0.log somewhere? (pastebin for example)

              First install linux headers:
              Code:
              sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
              this package will automatically install latest linux headers.

              and then install fglrx:
              Code:
              sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb
