Phoronix: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Alpha 4 Released

It's arriving a day late, but this evening Steve Langasek has announced the availability of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Alpha 4. This is the fourth Hardy Heron alpha release and new in this release is the inclusion of the Transmission BitTorrent client, the Vinagre VNC client, Brasero CD/DVD burner, a world clock applet for GNOME, GVFS through GNOME 2.21/2.22, and a few virtualization improvements...

I've been testing Hardy since the initial repository was opened, but decided that in honor of alpha 4 I should wipe the partition (dev/sdb2) and do a bare metal install from the CD (/home is a separate partition).

Bad plan. The installer got confused right after the partitioning selection screen, complaining it could not unmount /dev/sda1. Investigating.

It works as long as the partition to which the install is going is already formatted. Installing to unpartitioned space on the drive does not work.

      Investigating
