There's an interesting and very promising open-source first person shooter game that does offer impressive graphics but is still a couple years from reaching a beta state...

sorry but this game looks like quake 1. far from "impressive".

anyway, graphical realism and effects dont' really matter as long as the style and playability are awesome

A lot of game creation means writing the actual game, balancing weapons maps everything, making it fun and most of all: creating great assets for your game! Stop focusing so much on adding SSAO and global illumination and god knows what else and focus on having cool maps and objects.
      Agreed.
Also, something I miss so much in every FOSS game: exterior maps.

Typical un-news article about irrelevant product X not hitting milestone Y, but making it sound like it matters.

With a little luck this game will see release just about the time it's graphics begins to look horribly dated.

uhm what? Have you ever played Quake 1? Or even saw it? Even Quake 3 Arena looks worse than Unvanquished.

Did you even play Unvanquished? I don't think so. You didn't even look at screenshots or models.
