Suspend/Hibernate still failing on 8.01

I still can't suspend or hibernate on 8.01. I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy on a Dell E1505 with a Mobility Radeon X1400. I've seen reports of other people with this configuration suspending/hibernating successfully, so I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Neither of these seem to give me any reason for suspend/hibernate failing. Are there other places that I can look for clues?

This new fglrx also seems to be giving me problems with whenever gnome-screensaver turns off the monitor, it doesn't come back on.

So, suspend fails, and the computer comes back online by itself afterwords ? Suspend doesn't cause a crash, it just doesn't work ? In that case, what is the contents of your kernel log after a failed suspend-attempt ? Type 'dmesg' in a terminal window and paste the contents somewhere.

That was all the dmesg output after a failed suspend ? You sure ? No hint there, I guess. I'd try homerhomer's suggestion first (I've disabled all those options myself, in /etc/default/acpi-support, but forgot to mention it). But I'm not sure that will help you, since you are unable to suspend at all. Those options probably will only help if you have trouble with resuming from a successful suspend.

The fglrx-driver should take care of kicking you graphics card back into life on resume, as long as you are suspending from within X. Those ACPI resume commands (POST video, save VBE state, etc) can certainly interfere with that process.

I had those options disabled already. No luck.

I see that a lot of people seem to be having luck with updating to the Hardy kernel and then suspend/hibernate works for them. Any reason not to do this?

I'm having a similar problem here with gutsy and the generic kernel, fglrx 8.01 and a Radeon Mobility x1600 in my LG S1pro Laptop.

The symptom is as usual: I tell the computer to switch to suspend, all works well, the monitor goes off, the hdd shuts down but then the power led and the fan stay on and the laptop is dead as a doornail until a hard (power button 5 s) shutdown.

Yes, I've tried the settings in acpi-support but to no avail.

My question is - what should I look for, and where? Dmesg? Xorg.log?

Could someone with more Linux-skills than myself please give me a hint, how to pinpoint the problem?

P.S.: Suspend and resume work fine when using the "vesa" xorg-driver.

P.P.S.: Oh - and I am using a 1680x1050 resolution.

though i'd share my story of failed suspend (and ask for your ideas and tips )
my laptop seems to suspend properly, but when i hit the button to resume, it accessed the hdd for some secs and then...nothing
oh, and the cards fan starts spinning like crazy after about 10 or so secs...
with drivers prior to 7.12 (if i remember well) the suspend part didn't work as well, kinda like what bernhard described
