Phoronix: Apple iPad 2 As Fast As The Cray-2 Super Computer

A university research director has shown that Apple's iPad 2 is as fast as the Cray-2 vector super-computer out of Cray Research from the 1980's. With some work to to the software, the iPad 2 performance benchmark result is quite impressive...

very fascinating article. hah imagine if someone took a bunch of discarded/retired smartphones and made a cluster server out of them to beat out an even greater supercomputer.

Nah. Our computing power needs increased quite a lot since then.

But thats technology. It advances fast.

Well, a supercomputer from 30 years ago that is .. xP
Heck, there's kitchens more powerful from the computer technology that existed then...

Not really. The Communication between devices are not for free.

Thing is, if this were a normal supercomputer they were testing against from back then, I think the iPad would have fared much better. The early Cray supercomputers were designed for very specific workloads and designed accordingly. That being said, they would fare pretty poorly in any more general benchmark.

              This is ancient news

Top500 and Linpack co-manager Dr. Jack Dongarra already published the iPad 2/Cray-2 equality - back in May 2011, see http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/0...puter-of-yore/ .

But Cray-2's are far more expensive...even a used one
