Why do ARM motherboards need custom images of the kernel? Isn't it possible to detect and load the appropriate drivers dynamically, like on x86?

i dont think the problem is the driver, but that the arm plattform doesnt have a standardized boot process.

ARM is a pain in the ass when it comes to booting stuff. They're all wired differently without anything even remotely resembling standardization. If the ARM platform is to succeed long term, something MUST be done to standardize. It will otherwise remain a big pile of proprietary lock-out crap.
