"The next full release will be X11R7.8 and may happen in 2013."

By that time will anyone care?

I believe kde 5.0. Will be out by then, probably sporting decent wayland support, and no doubt gnome 3.6 sporting similar functionality......

      Great!

I hope the upcoming X.org 7.8 katamari will add support for xwayland and running X without root privileges.

        What about Wine?

...including allowing clients to track raw events from input devices...
Does this mean RAW input handling in Wine can finally be properly implemented?

        Thanks

It's unlikely that by 2013 every single X app will be ported to Wayland, so many Linux users will still want the libraries & Xwayland, and all the users of other kernels (BSD, MacOS, Solaris, Cygwin, etc.) will still be wanting something to run on their non-Wayland-supported systems.

Wayland's current status: it continues to be the vaporware windowing system that is the darling of people who have no idea about what X really does or what its problems might be.

Exactly, no way all the X11 developers working on wayland have any clue about X11.
