    VIA does indeed suck, but there are a few things that you can safely use that are VIA right now:

    1. Things integrated onto motherboards that are fundamentally someone else's. For instance, ASrock and ASUS sometimes put certain VIA chipsets (IDE, PCI, SATA or USB) on motherboards they make, and the motherboard core is based on an Intel design such as Z77. The open source support for these "things" is generally pretty good, whether thanks to VIA's direct involvement in contributing, or community driven development.

    2. Anything that doesn't require a driver at all is fair game, just evaluate the hardware on its merits and buy it or don't buy it.
