So does this mean we can finally play Blu-ray material on Linux? With menus and all?

I'd take that with a grain of salt till some users with blu-ray drives throw some stuff at it to see how it works

It will probably only works with unencrypted bluray disks... So we will still need to use some "tricks" to play those movies on ours linux machines....

              Yes. No.

I am playing Blu-ray discs with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, VLC 2.0.1, libaacs, KEYDB.cfg.

You must disable the menus or VLC crashes/ freezes.

              Plays http://www.amazon.co.uk/Underworld-A...8215417&sr=1-1

              Howto:

As usual with Michael's "journalism", a term has been introduced without further explanation because "the reader already knows". Sorry Michael, this doesn't work like that. When you can't google "blueray protocol" and get a definition in the first 10 results, you MUST explain what it means.

So we can't deduct from the news what all this means for the near future. Bluray playback? We had that for a while. Menus? Who knows. Bluray extra features? Only God knows. Etc.

Most likely it just means compiled against libbluray. There is no menu support, but at least playlists. aacs via keyfile only works in rare cases compared to the total number of bd. As linux only solution you could use makemkv's streaming support to play those without ripping but i would like to see a full featured player. Maybe it would be more successful than lindvd which was outdated when it was shipped. The bd standard should get rid of the enforced use of hdcp, that protocol is fully analysed, can be emulated and rips are usually not done that way anyway. After that there could be an official linux bd player created...
