While the codenames are unprofessional, it's pretty funny when people ask what OS I run and I reply with:

"I'm running a beefy miracle on my laptop"

          or

"I'm running a spherical cow on my laptop"

You're absolutely right. I propose Fedora use serious names like "Ice Cream Sandwich".

Well, it is not as if Fedora is meant as a serious commercial operation. If it was an RHEL release with that codename...

the Linux distro grml has clearly better release names IMHO:
Release announcement for Grml 2011.12 - codename Knecht Rootrecht (similar to Knecht Ruprecht, in the German tradition that's the helper of St Nicholas, who punish bad children; rootrecht -> root permission)
                    Previous releases
grml 2011.05 - codename Just Mari
                    grml 2010.12 - codename Gebr?der Grml
grml 2010.04 - codename Grmlmonster (similar to Kr?mmelmonster was a monster in the German version of Sesame Street)
                    grml 2009.10 - codename Hello-Wien
                    grml 2009.05 - codename Lackdose-Allergie
grml 2008.11 - codename Schluchtenscheisser (a insulting name for Austrians, translation could be: chasm shithead)
                    grml 1.1 - codename Skunk
grml 1.0 - codename Meilenschwein (mile pig)
                    grml 0.9 - codename Dioptrienotto
                    grml 0.8 - codename Funkenzutzler
grml 0.7 - codename Bootenschnitzl (schnitzl -> cutlet)
grml 0.6 - codename Winterschlapfn (wintershoe)
                    grml 0.5 - codename Tokolytika
grml 0.4 - codename Eierspass (eggfun)
grml 0.3 - codename Hustenstopper (coughstopper)
                    grml 0.2 - codename Satura
                    grml 0.1 - codename OS04
                    http://grml.org/changelogs/

grml is a system rescue distribution.
