        What would be useful is a description of how to install Qt 5.0 alongside an intact Qt 4.x installation, with minimal risks of ruining the Qt 4.x installation.

          Why would any be needed? The libraries have completely new file names in Qt 5 compared to Qt 4.

            You can install multiple 4.x versions side by side using different -prefix paths, so I don't see how installing 5.0 would be difficult.
