    • Not so negative as above

      Just installed...

      Ati Mobility Xpress 200M 5955 (128MB + 64MB shared)
      2.6.22-gentoo-r8 (with radeonfb in use)
      xorg-x11 7.2
      xorg-server 1.3
(RENDER, DAMAGE turned on, Textured* turned off, VideoOverlay on)

      Direct rendering: yes
      XVideo: yes
      Compiz: yes
      Composited xfwm4: yes
XVideo with all modes (YUY2, UYVY, YV12, I420) while using compiz: yes
      Suspend: not using
Widescreen with native resolution (1280x800): yes
Artifacts in corner or around cursor: no (not yet... But there wasn't any on 7.11)
      Xinerama, dual-head: not tested

      [email protected]: not tested
      [email protected]: crash, hard reboot
      [email protected]: ~1100fps
      [email protected]: ~1500fps
[email protected] with compiz: ~1000fps [flicker]
[email protected] with compiz: ~1100fps [flicker]

Compiz[-fusion from GIT] (wobbly off, cube off, simple animations. i don't like those fancy effects): usable, but on Xgl worked much faster
Compiz with blured windows: on Xgl it wasn't working at all, works on AIGLX. 4x slower than old blur from Beryl. not usable
      Using launcher fusion-icon

Nexuiz (640x480 windowed): on 7.11 and 7.12 works faster than on 8.40, but offset mapping is sooooooooo sloooooooow (on 8.40 was slow too) :< I can play with dynamic realtime lights and bump mapping, but it's slow on critical moments like few explosions at once.

      playback on mplayer: h.264, 704x448 (vo=null, ao=null: average 20% CPU)
      compiz, vo=xv: 100% CPU
compiz, vo=gl: 100% CPU, incredible flicker - unwatchable
      metacity, vo=xv: 20% CPU
metacity, vo=gl: 100% CPU (on 8.40 it usually was about 20-30% more than using xv... :< )
      metacity, vo=gl2: 100% CPU :<
Mplayer patched to use compiz video plugin

      ==

I'm satisfied (I think it's much better than 8.40), but it always could be better... On Windows i could play Portal with medium settings on 1280x800...
Anyway, next time i'll buy nv card, or laptop with nv built-in...

No I still have the PreInitDAL bug after trying everything I could think of. I have 2.6.22 still.

as you can see from fluidx post the drivers works fine and about the same for me too. i just have some more render enabled and texturedxrender and have the driver work at about 800fps. it works also with 2.6.23-r4 and now i'm testing the r5 to see how it behaves.
gentoo-sources-2.6.23-r5 work fine with the driver. i only got a file not found when i tried to apply the ati-powermode patch, but having compiled the driver for r4 just fine i maintained that script from the last compile.

the preinitdal also is not something due to fbuffer since i got it work also with fbsplash enabled and i don't experience problems. i really don't know how in the world it could happen.

          • I think what it comes down to is something in the kernel config. Maybe I'll go through and see what I think could cause this other than fb options. Is there perhaps a away that I could compare whats complied in my kernel with what is compiled in yours? Maybe that would tell us if something in there is causing it and if so what.

the /usr/src/linux/.config is the kernel config.
my kernel is gentoo-sources (patched with gentoo-patches) and running as amd64 native. then there are the base hw differences as the libata vs pata stack for disk and all the controllers and last but not least the board difference.
if you need it i could try to post my .config but be aware that there could be a lot of differences between mine and yours and finding differences would be quite hard. also, the same board would perform different on 2 different hw systems.

I'm having the same problem, I have an ati mobility radeon X2300. With 8.42.3 I had AIGLX/compiz working but no hibernate.
Now I installed 8.44.3 my compiz is broken but hibernate works.

                • I had my first instance of the artifact-at-bottom-right-corner problem with fglrx after using 7.12 for 5 days. It looked like 8 vertically-squeezed rectangles placed on a horizontal line (watermark letters?), and it didn't go away until I switched to a TTY console and came back to X. Compiz wasn't enabled. Using Mobility X300 128MB, Ubuntu Gutsy.

This happens to me too. Only when some 3D app crashes (wine games for example, they crashed already so I dont know for sure if it is wine or ATI or wine+ATI. Anyway this only appears now)

                      this was fixable by adding
                      Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
to your xorg.conf in the device section.
