  • Quiet Computing

One of the projects we have been working on is throwing together an incredibly quiet (yet blazing fast) server. The system revolves around the Tyan Tomcat i7520SD motherboard, with dual dual-core Xeon LV Sossaman CPUs. The other items include two Seagate SATA drives (will update to the 750GB Seagate drives once they arrive), DDR2 ECC, SilverStone Strider 560W PSU, and dual near-silent 80mm SilverStone intake fans. Everything is housed inside of the SilverStone LC-20M.

Below are a few teaser photos, until there is time to document everything.

Eight RAM slots... eventually they will be all full.

Those two fans you see, those are the CPU fans . The beauty of the quiet system is the new Xeon LV... It is a dual-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz (this model) and has a very low TDP -- about 30 Watts. Those tiny copper heatsinks and fans are all that's needed to cool the processors at suitable levels.

Gorgeous! Don't forget to put a price tag on it, so I can kick myself back to reality.

Heck with TDP that low you might as well get rid of the fans all together and just use some hefty heatsinks.
