    so any mach64 mga r128 savage sis tdfx unichrome chipset
    are no longer supported in Mesa >= 8.x ?

    That sounds right. IIRC the dividing line was any driver which had not yet moved to DRI2 (since DRI1 support was being dropped).

    That's true. What's left are drivers for Intel, ATI/AMD, nVidia hardware.

    does this only apply to xorg or is it affect the linux/drm as well,
    so you can still use mesa-7.x/6.x/etc on new kernels

    You can still use Mesa 7.11, which still includes all those dropped drivers, with newer kernel or Xorg versions. I don't know about libdrm but I guess it won't be immediately incompatible.
