I have a X700 mobility running 7.11 at the moment. Using xcompmgr with SHADOWS ONLY the performance is abysmal. Switching desktops or maximizing a typical firefox window takes about 2 seconds. Same is true for Compiz Fusion with minimal settings, though i only used CF to draw a comparison.
My integrated intel laptop with a slower processor preforms *much* better, with next to no lag at all.
Both run openbox with about the same number of processes, resource use, etc.
The X700 is quite fast w/ 3D apps and video playback, but performance just goes down the toilet with composite desktops.
Is this normal? Before anyone yells at me for not googling this topic, it seems that people have been pretty excited over "no slowdown" on their fglrx machine with multiple compiz fusion effects.
