    Why is this better? To me this just seems like a step back to the old desktop metaphor.

      ?Better? is subjective. Personally, I find GNOME Shell (default) better than classic GNOME Panel.

        I actually tried Mint 12 out and I can confirm that while improving some stuff it also makes other stuff worse (for example dnd doesn't work in some menus, some ppa's don't work properly etc).
        So Mint (12) isn't nearly as cool and neat over Ubuntu 11.10 as some Mint fans might suggest. But it's worth trying it out.

          agreed. The only gnome 3 extension i use is the one that adds a power button.... and that's on by default in opensuse 12.1
