    HELP!

I have reached my limit with this. I have a Panasonic CF-51 laptop with a 256MB X1300 card in it. I previously had FC5 installed and everything was excellent. Recently, I completely reinstalled the system with F7 and then F8. With F7 and F8, I can't get the graphical installer to work. When the install gets to the point where I should be picking keyboard layout, etc..., I get a blank screen and the system seems to be hung. CLT-ALT-BACKSPACE does nothing, etc... Only choice is to hard reboot.

So I installed in text mode, then I used livna to get kmod-fglrx installed. Rebooted and get taken to a command line login. Running start X sends me back to the blank screen and everything is hung again.

When I run fglrxinfo, I get an error: "Unable to open Display :0"! My Xorg log file shows no errors and the fglrx module seems to have loaded fine. I will include the log files below.

Kernel version: Linux version 2.6.23.1-49.fc8. I have not done any yum updates, etc... so everything is stock F8 except for the video drivers.

I appreciate any ideas/help that you can give. Also, I can post up the dmesg output or any other log files if they're helpfull. Thanks!

You mean you booted from the install DVD and could not get past the first few screens? Strange. Did you check forums.fedoraforum.org whether this is a known problem?

Kernel version: Linux version 2.6.23.1-49.fc8. I have not done any yum updates, etc... so everything is stock F8 except for the video drivers.

        [/CODE]
Then why is your kernel not 2.6.23.1-42, as that's the one that comes with the F8 DVD?

Does the card work with the vesa drivers?

        Did you try "aticonfig --initial"?

I booted from the DVD, I selected the first option (normal GUI install), and it runs through the normal startup stuff (all text). When it gets to where the GUI should come up and start asking for Keyboard type, etc..., I get a blank screen, and nothing else works.

The new kernel was created when I installed kmod-fglrx from livna.

The card didn't work prior to installing kmod-fglrx, which would have been the default vesa drivers. I tried the vesa drivers in F7 with the same effect... black screen.

aticonfig --initial does nothing because fglrx is already found due to livna setting up the xorg.conf file.

If it does neither work with vesa drivers nor with the installation CD, then I would assume that it's not an fglrx problem, but that F8 has some general problems of identifying your display. So it's probably better to search/ask in the Ffedora forums for people with similar experiences.

                I've installed F7/F8 on my mobility X1300 and then X1400 .

I am confused by your post.

You say you couldn't install graphically. But you have logs with f7 tags in them. Did you end up doing a text-only install? That may not install all the graphics stuff by default(Guessing; shot in dark).

I'd try to see why anaconda isn't recognizing your video setup. After the initial stuff(ncurses-style gui) goes away; anaconda ussually comes up with something to the effect of:
                Videocard: your video card
                Monitor: your monitorc

What does this look like for you?
Also did the media-check pass and/or md5sum checkout after download?

Back in the day, I know the DDC information coming from my monitor was incorrect and would fub up all linux liveCDs and installers. You could try passing the "skipddc" argument at boot-time(in the installer)..

So throw in the disc, wait for the menu, hit esc, then type in "linux skipddc".

The only way i could get either f7 or f8 to install was using the text method.

As for the anaconda stuff, are you talking about during install or during boot?

I'll have to go back and look tomorrow.

media checks out fine for both my f7 and f8 discs.

Also, what do you mean by "logs with f7 tags in them?

I'm actually leaning more towards this not being solely a video driver problem. It's really strange to me that fc5 works fine on this but later versions are broken.
