  • Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 for Ubuntu?

    Hi all,

is this PC system well balanced and will it run Ubuntu Linux?

I need to crunch through 48000 images of ca. 2 MB each and process them using hugin, nona and enblend tied together by Perl scripts for panorama stitching. No gaming at all. The video card is used for seam optimization only.

    Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
    AMD Phenom II X6 1090T (3,20GHz)
    4x 4GB DDR3 PC1333
    1000GB SATA3 HDD
    1GB Nvidia GTX550Ti HDMI DX 11
    550 Watt 14cm FAN Silent

Do you see a bottleneck anywhere?

I am thinking about adding a 128GB OCZ SSD with 550/500 read/write speed for the operating system.
    Would this make sense?

    Thanks,
    Jan

I have this board running Ubuntu 10.04 Lts - everything works fine except the Realtek NIC which has a known issue in Ubuntu .
I used an Intel PCIe NIC and disabled the onboard one . The board is running linux fine now .

Did you try updateing kernel to 3.1?

sometimes bios updates can help too.

There is a "fix" but although it gives a network connection for a while it drops out after 30 or so minutes and requires a restart to get networking back .

About Realtec ISSUE work perfect for me

First thing to do just after instaling Ubuntu 11.10
I have the r8168-8.027.00.tar.bz2 file saved in my USB copy it in /Download and my Internet is back to NORMAL

          Here are the detailed instructions:

          - Download the file from the official site

The rest of the steps depend on the filename and location of the downloaded file. Please adapt as required:

For example, if you download the file to your Downloads folder and the file is called r8168-8.025.00.tar.gz, the steps are the following

          Code: Select all
          cd ~/Downloads
          tar vjxf r8168-8.025.00.tar.gz
          cd r8168-8.025.00
          sudo ./autorun.sh
