Driver works with the compiz version 0.5.2 currently shipped with Debian

Getting back on topic, maybe the following helps some people to get around the pitfalls when running compiz.

Apparently, the Debian lenny/testing version of compiz (currently 0.5.2) ships without activation of the plugins required for all the compiz whiz-bang (see bug report http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=440095).

Therefore, it is necessary to activate the plugings manually, e.g. using gconf (gconf-editor). To do so follow these instructions:
http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/11253.html, be sure to get the order of the plugins right.

After that, start compiz from the command line using the usual

compiz --replace

That should do it. It worked for me using a Radeon 350(Radeon 9800 Pro) and the 8.42.3 fglrx driver. Activating the plugins got rid of the problem of missing window decorations after starting compiz and the error messages

GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with direct rendering.

and

compiz.real (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing

Make sure you have compiz-kde or compiz-gnome installed, they do the actual decorating of the windows.
