What I don't understand is how OO/LO can still be so damn fugly. Firefox sorted out gtk in ff3 ages ago. What's the big deal?

I can use alternate glyphs in LO, but have to copy them from somewhere else as they often aren't included in the symbols. I have found all I need on this website: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/
(note that this was done with LO 3.3.2 - but I think it'll still be working in 3.4)
I also hope that they will introduce a proper way to rotate, resize and crop images anywhere soon. I still have to run Microsoft Office for the time being.
