    Thanks, Bridgman, that makes a degree of sense. But I thought one of the points of HDMI was to enable devices to identify themselves and their resolutions without intervention!

    Depending on how I set the displays (ie: not cloning), I can tell it that the external TV is 1920x1080, and it does then display at that resolution. But I still don't get any more options on display 2 - nor have I (yet) been able to make it display my videos when I do this - although running in a seperate mode rather than cloned does stop mplayer-vaapi crashing (see other thread). But I can only get mplayer to run on the prime (internal) display - not the external! Although the cursor moves happily from one display to the other, I can't drag applications across!

    Grrr!

    OK, it may be something stupid that I am doing wrong, but surely it has to be easier than this???
