It actually has worked before NVIDIA introduced their auto select mode.

The only desktop performance problems I have had has been corruption around the mouse and watermark (which you won't have) on one specific R500 GPU. Aside from that, everything has been as smooth as silk.

Under win, according to tomshardware.com, a X800XL is little faster (1-2 fps) than an NV6600GT.

You must compare "apples with apples". Are you sure that the benchmark wasn't using direct x?

Dunno where you see 1-2 fps (even select other benchmarks), the X800Xl is 172% faster, even if its a 800 GTO (256 mb, which the phoronix article seems to mention it having), its still 138% faster.

Unless Im reading the wrong benchmarks.
