Phoronix: The Tests Showing Ubuntu 11.04 On A Power Consumption Binge

Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" is set to be released on Thursday and while there are a number of new features to talk about in this latest release, the Phoronix Test Suite software has been busy analyzing the performance of this latest release. There is open-source graphics driver improvements leading to some performance improvements (such as Radeon KMS page-flipping), the famous ~200 line Linux kernel patch to improve responsiveness, and various other enhancements that catch our fancy in Ubuntu 11.04. However, one area where there is a frightening regression in Ubuntu 11.04 is with its power consumption. For mobile devices in many workloads, Ubuntu 11.04 is consuming noticeably more power than in any of the past Ubuntu Linux releases. Sadly, no one seems to have noticed in time since continuous integration testing on Linux seems to happen so haphazardly right now.

'While the lines are a bit cluttered due to seven lines close to one another and the auto-coloring being close, the average/peak/low values at the top are clear and laid out from the oldest Ubuntu release to newest Ubuntu release (left-to-right). Note: the latest Phoronix Test Suite Git code now has an improved color allocation scheme that should hopefully result in further distinctions between colors on future graphs.'

Interesting article but of course it now raises the question, which linux distro is the best to run on a laptop?

          +1

It would be nice to have such a distro shootout.

since my AC power meters have no USB interface or any other way for the Phoronix Test Suite to read the values without manual intervention, there are no results to publish on the desktop / server side.

How close are you to finding the cause via git-bisect?

I know what's causing it as in what commit Linus pulled in a branch that contains the regression. That branch is almost done being bisected to know the very specific cause but already know what the regression is to do with. Should have final confirmation and such on Phoronix in an article tomorrow or Monday. If it continues panning out as in the file where the regression occurred, it has the potential of affecting a lot of people, but waiting for final confirmation before saying more.

This issue clearly demonstrates how the Phoronix Test Suite can help with doing important testing.

Yep, and if what this bug looks like it is from where PTS and I are right now in the bisecting process, it's about to slap many people in the face and will affect an incredible number of systems upon Natty's release if it can't be corrected easily -- I'm uncertain at the moment until it's fully bisected whether or not it could be a trivial fix.
