  • choosing linux desktop

    Hey All,

I'm vaguely toying around with building a desktop system for Linux. I've been a laptop user for years so I'm completely out of touch with desktop hardware and designing my own system (though I know obvious things like buy Nvidea vs ATI and I've been a linux user for a long time). Could anyone point me to some interesting _modern_ links on building a nice linux desktop? I know how to do it but I just need hardware recommendations. I'm thinking about starting with a very minimal system and adding components as I go along. I don't want to spend a huge amount but I'd like to get the a system that reminds me how much nicer desktops are than laptops ;->

    thanks

You can see our hundreds of Phoronix hardware articles at http://www.phoronix.com/?page=phoronix_articles

Do you have any preference on Intel or AMD?

What will you be using this desktop for?

Well, to be honest, I don't really _need_ a desktop because I don't do any intense work on my computer but its probably not good for you to always use a laptop and a desktop feels more relaxing. I will spend most of my time browsing and doing things like typing this. I'm a scientist so I'll use Latex and other typesetting stuff. I used to be a coder so maybe I'll go back to that someday. I haven't gamed in years and I don't think I'll start but its good to keep your options open. I will use Mathematica and other such things (that can be very CPU intensive) and NVidia has some packages that allow you to take advantage of the GPU for mathematical calculations so if mathematica ever takes advantage of that it would be nice to have a real GPU. Realistically though I don't need a machine with two GPU slots and GPUs with a gig of ram. I do like having two (or three) displays, beryl and enough disk space to store stuff. Basically I could probably do just as well buying a keyoard, external display, and external disk for my laptop(s) but it doesn't seem as fun ;-> It would just be nice to read some article about building a midrange linux PC and see if I feel like shelling out for it.

Is it somehow possible to connect two display to a laptop?
