growing desperate. admin died suddenly last weekend and no one has root access

He was young but got hospitalized suddenly last weekend and left this world.

Unfortunately, Our admin didn't document the new storage system built on openindiana which we are using in our production environment. the system got rebooted and now the nfs share is in read-only mode. no one has the root access to change the permission level of the share. I've tried booting into single user mode but it still asks for the user/pass.

Has anyone successfully reset the root pass on openindiana? please help. We are willing to compensate for your troubles.

boot to CD

boot to an openindiana/opensolaris live cd mount the zfs root slice, modify the passwords in /etc to be blank and then log in as the old system user ...

you should then be able to log in as that user and pfexec/sudo/su - to the user you want.

yes I got it all sorted out... I jumped in to IRC #openindiana and fellow members there walked me through.

You are really lucky that he did not use an encrypted filesystem. Without encryption bypassing the root pw with physical access is a piece of cake. It is so simple that you can even find youtube videos of younsters showing how to do that with osx - the same is true for every *nix bootloader with unrestricted edit mode. For win you need at least another boot media
