  • X1300 woes

I've been driving myself nuts trying to verify/fix my issues with a X1300 card (Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop). I don't know much about these things, but I have it working now partially. glxgears gives about 100fps, which seems very low. fgl_glxgears gives 150-200fps.

I'm running gentoo with xorg-7.1 (recently stable on gentoo) and ati-drivers-8.27.10. I've tried both 8.28.8 (seems to work the same) and 8.29.6 (doesn't work). Kernel is 2.6.17-gentoo-r8. Before I upgraded xorg I was running 7.0 and apart from an error about AIXGL everything was running as now.

What really caused me to believe something is amiss was dualbooting with SUSE and over there I get 800fps with glxgears. The ati driver is 8.26.18, however, the kernel is older and xorg I guess is too. So I tried to clone the SUSE setup without much success and I'm stuck.

Anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?

I know 8.29.6 has been released, but on my system it fails with..

    Code:
    (EE) fglrx(0): PreInitDAL failed
    (EE) fglrx(0): PreInit failed
I also tried upgrading to kernel 2.6.18-gentoo-r1 without any luck.

      Welcome to the forums.

What is the output of fglrxinfo? If ATI Technologies isn't listed for OpenGL, that would explain the performance problems, since the fglrx drivers aren't running (which looks to be the case).

Anyways, glxgears isn't a very accurate benchmark, as you may know. On a Mobility Radeon X1400 here are some results from glxgears and fgl_glxgears with fglrx 8.29.6 for comparison.

      [phoronix@phormobile ~]$ glxgears
      1212 frames in 5.0 seconds = 242.219 FPS
      1247 frames in 5.0 seconds = 249.398 FPS
      1249 frames in 5.0 seconds = 249.799 FPS
      [phoronix@phormobile ~]$ fgl_glxgears
      Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
      2517 frames in 5.0 seconds = 503.400 FPS
      3133 frames in 5.0 seconds = 626.600 FPS
      3096 frames in 5.0 seconds = 619.200 FPS
On your 8.29.6 driver problem, here on the Gentoo Forums seems to be the same issue with an apparent fix.

In regards to X-Video not working, there is currently a bug with the fglrx drivers where Avivo / TexturedVideo will not function with X.Org 7.1 (Bug Topic: 737-22852).

Yeah, I heard that glxgears is flaky, however since I can get radically different rates on SUSE than Gentoo, it seems that all is not well, right? I mean same card, same hardware... btw xvinfo does list a bunch of stuff on SUSE, unlike what I posted from my gentoo setup.

I looked at the gentoo thread and the issue is not fixed there unfortunately.

This may be a silly question, but is there a newbie guide to video cards/drivers somewhere? Something to explain basic things like X-Video, direct rendering etc?

Hmmm so according to your fglrxinfo output the fglrx drivers are actually running.

There is not necessarily a problem, can you run some more reliable benchmark? Perhaps Enemy Territory, Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo, GLOBS, or SPECViewPerf (all freely available). Those programs are better metrics as to whether you have a real performance problem.

Is your SUSE installation using X.Org 7.1?

I am not aware of any complete guide at this time, unfortunately none is completed at Phoronix right now.

No, SUSE ships with xorg 6.9.

Alright, I ran SPECViewperf and it tends to lock up X. These are the results I have from benchmarks that ran to completion:

            Code:
            3dsmax-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = 4.142
            catia-02 Weighted Geometric Mean = 5.378
            light-08 Weighted Geometric Mean = 5.919
            maya-02 Weighted Geometric Mean = 3.753
            proe-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = 3.008
            sw-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 5.965

Were these SPEC results from Gentoo or SuSE? Did you run it in the other distribution to compare the results?

They are from gentoo. I'll run the suite on SUSE to compare.

Alright, I re-ran the same benchmarks on SUSE and here are the results. I have longer reports from every report as well if you need those.

                  Code:
                  3dsmax-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = 4.185
                  catia-02 Weighted Geometric Mean = 5.497
                  light-08 Weighted Geometric Mean = 5.972
                  maya-02 Weighted Geometric Mean = 3.468
                  proe-04 Weighted Geometric Mean = 3.157
                  sw-01 Weighted Geometric Mean = 6.210
I don't really know what these numbers mean, or what the scale is, but the ones from SUSE seem to be just a little higher than I got on Gentoo (except for maya which goes the other way). I kept an eye on the logs during this process to see if I would get errors in dmesg, but I didn't get any.

The numbers are virtually the same, so it leads me to believe based on that there is no major problems with your driver installation on Gentoo. The small performance difference could easily be attributed to differences in your packages between Getoo and SuSE, etc... Did you try running any benchmarks in games?
