  • Chrome drops H.264 support

    About time.

    HTML5 (webm): Firefox + Chrome + Opera = 45%
    HTML5 (h264): IE9 + Safari = 6%

Looks like the web is moving towards the correct direction.

Users will still be able to access h264 via flash, but HTML5 is now weighting heavily in favor of the free WebM.

I wouldn't say they "dropped h264 support" with them including flash in the mix.

This is about H.264. Flash is orthogonal to that.

Flash supports h264 playback. It also had the advantage of being able to use the hardware decoders on the video cards vs a shader based solution that Chrome was first thinking of.

One other thing, IE9 is still in beta so few users are actually using it at the moment. When IE9 goes final you will see a drastic swing in those numbers. IE 9 and Safari will probably swing to over 50% when that happens.

IE8 has been out for 2 years and it still has lower usage share than Firefox. Since IE9 won't even run on WinXP, it's uptake will be even lower.

So no, IE9+Safari won't surpass Firefox+Chrome+Opera anytime soon.

Fake edit: I was using outdated statistics, IE8 has surpassed firefox worldwide (but is trailing significantly on Europe).
