          Why not accelerate the video on ATI cards in shaders? Is it much worse than using UVD2/3?

              Yes, but the shader implementation would be far better than what we have now at least.

                  I'd first need to study a "hello world" shader introduction. Then have a look at what accelerated video decoding actually is.

                    I don't know if the code still works with the latest kernel drivers but reading through the code would probably still be useful.
